First there were bottles, than there were cans. As Tap Trailers know, cans are the new hot trend in craft beer. Now beer packaging is evolving yet again. Carlsberg is planning to produce the world’s first fully biodegradable bottle. It will be made of “bio-based” materials. The bottle and cap would be wood based.
Made from sustainably sourced wood-fiber, all materials used in the bottle, including the cap, will be developed using bio-based and biodegradable materials.
According to Carlsberg’s Senior VP of Corporate Affairs, Andraea Dawson-Shepherd, their intention is to move towards a zero-waste business model.
“At Carlsberg we are firm believers in the importance of a circular economy in ensuring sustainable future growth and development on our planet, and today’s announcement is excellent news. If the project comes to fruition, as we think it will, it will mark a sea-change in our options for packaging liquids, and will be another important step on our journey towards a circular, zero-waste economy.”
How would you respond if the craft brewing industry started bottling beer in cardboard? You can’t see your beer in a can, so you don’t need to see it in a wood fiber bottle than either, right?
